Undocumented migrants hale from many different countries and struggle to survive in many different societies. St Patrick’s Day always brings a focus on the estimated 50,000 Irish undocumented that live and work in the USA. This short film by the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) highlights the difficulties experienced by undocumented migrants and their families. It relates the story of a young man from Ireland – but it also focuses on the heart break of undocumented migrants in Ireland. This is a story of solidarity rather than exceptionalism. It challenges the Irish Government to show understanding and to take action to regularise the position of undocumented migrants in Ireland on the very week that Enda Kenny will be making the same case for the undocumented Irish in America. The final irony was that according to the sources, St Patrick himself was initially the victim of forced trafficking and later returned as a migrant. Faith triumphed over the paperwork!
